Beth Hillel is proud to be the Reform/Progressive Jewish community in Rome. It was founded in 2014 to provide a home for the diversity of Jews seeking an egalitarian and inclusive alternative to the strict control of Rome’s Orthodox rabbinate. In spite of this, Beth Hillel has grown to include over three hundred members from Italy and abroad, and a regular religious school for some 40 children. After many years of wandering from one temporary facility to another, we purchased a space of our own in 2025, a former supermarket in the beautiful Prati neighborhood. We were able to do this, and commence extensive renovations, thanks to two generous gifts from U.S. donors. But before we can realize the dream of establishing our welcoming synagogue and community cultural center, we will need additional generous support from our members and friends around the world.

Beth Hillel è orgogliosa di rappresentare la comunità ebraica Reform/progressiva di Roma. È stata fondata nel 2014 per accogliere quella varietà di ebrei alla ricerca di un'alternativa egualitaria e inclusiva al rigido controllo del rabbinato ortodosso romano. Da allora, Beth Hillel è cresciuta fino a contare oltre trecento membri, provenienti dall'Italia e dall'estero, e una scuola religiosa frequentata regolarmente da circa 40 bambini. Dopo anni trascorsi spostandosi tra diverse sedi provvisorie, nel 2025 abbiamo acquistato uno spazio tutto nostro: un ex supermercato nel bellissimo quartiere Prati. Abbiamo potuto realizzare questo progetto e avviare importanti lavori di ristrutturazione grazie a due generose donazioni provenienti dagli Stati Uniti. Tuttavia, per coronare il sogno di creare una sinagoga accogliente e un centro culturale comunitario, avremo bisogno di ulteriore, generoso sostegno da parte dei nostri membri e amici in tutto il mondo.

Jewish life on the Italian peninsula reaches back to antiquity, but Reform/Progressive Judaism has emerged only in the past 25 years. There are now seven Reform/Progressive congregations in Italy, with Beth Hillel Rome being the largest. All seven congregations belong to the Italian Federation for Progressive Judaism (FIEP), and are recognized by both the European and the World Union for Progressive Judaism (EUPJ and WUPJ). But we are not recognized by the Italian state, and consequently do not receive the public funding and tax benefits accorded to the state-recognized Orthodox Union of Italian Jewish Communities. As a result, our Beth Hillel congregation must live exclusively on membership fees and donations, which makes support from abroad all the more important to us.

La presenza ebraica nella penisola italiana risale all'antichità, ma l'ebraismo Reform/progressivo è emerso solo negli ultimi 25 anni. Attualmente in Italia esistono sette congregazioni Reform/progressive; la più grande è Beth Hillel a Roma. Tutte e sette le congregazioni aderiscono alla Federazione Italiana per l'Ebraismo Progressivo (FIEP) e sono riconosciute sia dall'Unione Europea per l'Ebraismo Progressivo (EUPJ) che da quella mondiale (WUPJ). Tuttavia, non godiamo del riconoscimento da parte dello Stato italiano e, di conseguenza, non beneficiamo dei fondi pubblici né delle agevolazioni fiscali riservati all'Unione delle Comunità Ebraiche Italiane (UCEI), di orientamento ortodosso e riconosciuta dallo Stato. Pertanto, la nostra congregazione Beth Hillel deve sostenersi esclusivamente attraverso le quote associative e le donazioni: ciò rende per noi ancora più prezioso il sostegno proveniente dall'estero.

His vision of a Jewish community center - housing our synagogue, school and rich social and cultural spaces - is the promised land of our dreams.
